The visual inspiration for this origin sequence is, like many things in the film, taken from Frank Miller, Klaus Janson, and Lynn Varley’s seminal The Dark Knight Returns, which was first published in 1986. That’s not true, but it sometimes feels that way. To make up for that six month gap, DC Comics and their media partners are now contractually obligated to re-tell Batman’s origin in some form, whether it’s in the comics, on the screen, or via finger puppets, every six months in perpetuity. ![]() While Batman first appeared in Detective Comics #27 in 1939, we didn’t see his actual origin until a two-page segment in Detective Comics #33.
